Welcome Letter

Dear English 111 Correspondent Student:

Welcome to English 111 at ICC! This letter explains how our class will operate and contains the materials you need to begin your work. Please read them carefully to make sure that you have enrolled in the class that is right for you.

You should apply the list below throughout the semester:

Course Schedule and Requirements
Textbook Readings
Assignments for 5 research essays: invention, annotated bibliography, biography, trace source, World Wide Web essay.
Some sample essays and handouts for the 5 research essays.
Argument essay guidelines and question sheet.

Taking this course requires a significant time commitment on your part. For a 3-hour course, the normal expectation is 2-3 hours of preparation for each class hour each week, in addition to the hours spent in class. Most students need to spend roughly 120 hours to complete the work for this course.

The purpose of this course is to teach you valuable researching skills and then to apply that research to a well-developed and organized argument essay. These skills will serve you well in whatever academic or occupational goals you pursue.

You may hand-deliver your essays to me in room 313-B, deliver them to the mailroom secretary, room 313-F, send them by snail mail, or by e-mail. I hope I can assist you in achieving your goal of successfully completing this course. Enjoy.

Sincerely,

Paul Resnick
Asst. Prof. of English
