Illinois Central College - Web Curriculum

Program Overview

The Illinois Central College (ICC) web curriculum is a comprehensive program building upon a solid foundation of Internet and WWW fundamentals (we initially create web pages with Notepad so students understand the elements and attributes). The program also covers major technologies, such as:

ICC presently offers a 2-year degree (Associates in Applied Science) in web systems .

We were the second community college in the United States to offer such a degree; we are the first in the United States to offer a certificate in rich Internet application development (employing technologies such as AJAX and Flash). ICC also offers certificates in web design, web development, web administration, e-Commerce, and rich Internet application development (details for each program are linked from this page).

We encourage you to explore the opportunities linked from this page.

Why choose the ICC web curriculum?

The certificate programs (and course content) map well to established WOW associate certification exams. ICC web designer, web developer, and web administrator programs were developed by ICC personnel and reviewed by WOW (World Organization of Webmasters). WOW does not offer a rich Internet application developer exam. All web programs were developed by ICC personnel and follow generally accepted industry guidelines. Furthermore, ICC is a WOW Academy. [The link to the WOW Academy information will open in a new browser window.]

The ICC web designer certificate classes may be taken entirely online. Core web technology classes in the web developer certificate also may be taken entirely online (some electives are only offered as traditional classes). Students will not need to attend the ICC campus to take exams, visit labs, etc. Many classes in other web technologies are also offered online. The list of available online courses continues to grow. Please contact us if you wish to learn more concerning a specific class.

Illinois Central College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, located at 30 North LaSalle, Suite 2400, Chicago, Illinois 60602-2504 (312-263-0456).

Students are exposed to current technologies. ICC provides a virtual lab environment so that students do not need to purchase their own copies of Dreamweaver, Flash, PhotoShop, etc. Students are able to access these technologies via their web browser and are able to save their work to their local drives. Significant efforts are made by ICC faculty to keep these programs current (as evidenced by being the first community college to offer a rich Internet application developer certificate and the second community college to offer a two year web technology degree).

Classes are taught by practicing web professionals (who also have significant experience in education and training). Students are exposed to real-world examples, and students have the opportunity to work with actual clients (typically not for profit organizations). This is true for both traditional classes and those offered exclusively via the Internet. Some faculty also hold a number of web-specific certifications.

Costs - At the time of this writing (Summer, 2006), costs for a class are approximately $70 per semester hour, plus costs of textbooks. Thus, for a 3 semester hour class with a required textbook, class would be approximately $250 - $275 ($210 for tuition, the remainder depends on the cost of the textbook).

ICC web classes can be transferred to selected universities (such as Franklin University and Robert Morris College) for students who wish to complete their Bachelor's degree. Franklin University allows for students to complete their classes online as well. These classes also transfer to other universities (contact us for more information).
