During the spring 2002 semester, apprentices of the National Electrical Contractors Association/International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (NECA/IBEW) built scaffolding for the Peoria Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, as part of their welding training at Illinois Central College. The scaffolding is being used on the first Peoria area "Women Build" home. Except for some of the plumbing and heating this home will be built 100% by women. Around 300 women have volunteered for this project and on the day this picture was taken, 25 women were on the job site. All the volunteers went through a basic training program to learn how to use a hammer, do framing,
hang drywall and siding.

Once on the job site, volunteers were allowed to further develop those skills. The 936 square foot house was started on April 28th and should be completed the second week of July. The "Women Build" project plans to build one house a year in the Peoria area. Visit the Projects Page for an Instruction Sheet on welding the Scaffolding.
